Hops Humulus lupulus L.
Hops is one of the few herbs in our materia medica with documented estrogenic substances of undetermined chemical structure — two compounds with molecular weights of roughly 66,000–80,000 and 80,000. This is worth flagging to students because it explains several traditional observations at once: why Hops has a long folk history around female reproductive complaints, why some practitioners caution against long-term heavy use in hormone-sensitive conditions, and why the plant's action feels broader than a simple sedative. Keep this in mind when combining Hops into formulas for clients with hormone-sensitive concerns.
Primary body systems: Nervous system (tonic nervine, anodyne), digestive/hepatic system (liver and gall ducts, mild laxative), and urinary system (antilithic — helps against calculi/gravel).
How it works: Hops is a relaxing nervine of considerable power. It soothes and quiets the whole nervous system without the depressive after-effects seen with opiates — the client is quieted, and no ill effects follow. This makes it a go-to herb wherever sleeplessness, nervous overwork, or mental confusion is the picture.
Hepatic/digestive affinity: Hops has a favorable alterative property, relieving the secretory organs. It exerts a relaxing influence on the liver and gall ducts and is very gently laxative to the bowels — useful in some liver troubles and jaundice.
Urinary affinity: Antilithic action gives Hops a traditional reputation in calculus (stone/gravel) conditions.
Tonic Nervine — A fine relaxing nervine of great power; soothes and quiets the whole nervous system.
Anodyne — Relieves pain; underlies its traditional use for toothache, neuralgia, and painful swellings.
Antilithic — Traditional reputation for calculus (stone-forming) conditions.
Anthelmintic — Used traditionally to expel worms, taken as a decoction in the mornings.
Insomnia: The Hops pillow has been used since early days and is certainly effective — it will soothe and quiet the whole nervous system.
Sleeplessness, nervous troubles, and mental confusion: A most soothing effect, frequently promoting sleep in overwrought conditions.
Inflammation, rheumatism, neuralgia, and boils: As a poultice and fomentation, Hops is a superior article — often used alone, or combined with Chamomile, Poppy heads, or Ragwort. Applied to painful swellings, it relieves pain and reduces swelling.
Liver troubles and jaundice: Useful because of a favorable alterative property; relaxing to the liver and gall ducts, and gently laxative to the bowels.
Worms: The decoction, taken in the mornings, has traditional anthelmintic use.
Excessive sexual desire, pruritus, painful erections, and nymphomania: Hops is described as a good agent for these conditions.
Toothache and neuralgia: A flannel bag filled with Hops and heated will often bring relief.
Inducing sleep (tincture): The tincture may be used to induce sleep. The client will be quieted and no ill effects will follow, such as is found after using opiates.
Traditional Formula — Hops Pillow for Insomnia
Used from early days for sleeplessness; certainly effective.

Preparation: Stuff a pillow with dried Hops flowers.
Use: Let the patient use it as an ordinary pillow. It will soothe and quiet the whole nervous system.
Traditional Formula — Sleeplessness & Nervous Infusion
For sleeplessness, nervous troubles, and mental confusion; frequently promotes sleep in overwrought conditions.
- Hops (Humulus lupulus) Strobiles — 14 g (½ oz)
- Boiling Water — 476 ml (1 pint)
Preparation: Infuse the Hops in the boiling water.
Dose: 30–45 ml (2–3 tablespoons) every one, two, or three hours as needed.
Traditional Formula — Poultice/Fomentation for Inflammation, Rheumatism, Neuralgia & Boils
Applied to painful swellings, relieves pain and reduces swelling. Some herbs in this formula are covered in our advanced course.

Preparation: Standard tincture of Hops strobiles.
Dose: 2.5–5 ml (½ to 1 teaspoon) as needed for sleep.
Traditional Formula — Heated Hops Bag for Toothache & Neuralgia
Simple external application for localized pain relief.

A member of the Cannabaceae, this perennial climber with annual stems runs to considerable height in hedges, trees, and shrubs, up to 6 meters (18 feet). The stems twist clockwise and give rise to opposite leaves at intervals — broadly ovate, cordate at the base, deeply 3–5 lobed, sharply-toothed, with acuminate lobes and a very rough surface; smaller leaves are single-lobed.
The plants are dioecious. Male flowers appear in catkins in the upper leaf axils, about 5 mm in diameter, yellowish-green, with a 5-segmented perianth and 5 stamens. Female flowers are closely stacked, cone-like strobili made up of bracts, with the flowers themselves tucked into the bract axils. After fertilization, these cones grow from 15–20 mm up to 5 cm in length, changing from pale greenish-yellow to yellow-brown to brown. The odour of the female strobiles is characteristically heavy, and the taste is bitter.
Distribution: Native to northern temperate zones; found in hedgerows and thickets, on damp humus-rich soils in warm situations.
Cultivation: Grows wild; also cultivated commercially in Northern Europe, North America, and Chile. Prefers moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Propagate by tip cuttings in spring from female plants, or by division. Remove the previous season's growth during dormancy.
Harvest: Flowers are picked in autumn and used fresh or dried. Note: some people find fresh Hops to be a skin irritant and allergen — worth mentioning to students who may be harvesting by hand.
Volatile oil: About 0.4–0.85%, composed mainly of humulene (α-caryophyllene) with β-caryophyllene, myrcene, farnesene, 2-methylbut-3-ene-2-ol, 3-methylbut-2-ene-1-ol, 2,3,5-trithiahexane, and similar compounds, with traces of acids such as 2-methylpropanoic and 3-methylbutanoic — these trace acids increase significantly in concentration in stored extracts.
Flavonols: Mainly glycosides of kaempferol and quercetin.
Resins: About 3–12%, composed of bitter acids such as lupulone, colupulone, and adlupulone.
Estrogenic substances: Of undetermined structure; two of these have molecular weights of approximately 66,000–80,000 and 80,000 respectively (see Teaching Point above).
Miscellaneous: Tannins, lipids, and chalcones including xanthohumol.
Pillow: Dried strobiles stuffed into a pillow and used as an ordinary pillow for insomnia — no measuring required.
Infusion: 14 g (½ oz) Hops to 476 ml (1 pint) boiling water. Dose 30–45 ml (2–3 tablespoons) every 1–3 hours as needed.
Decoction (for worms): 28 g (1 oz) Hops to 476 ml (1 pint) water. Dose 238–476 ml (½–1 pint) in the mornings.
Tincture: 2.5–5 ml (½–1 teaspoon) dose to induce sleep.
Poultice/fomentation: Applied externally, alone or combined with Chamomile, Poppy heads, or Ragwort, for inflammation, rheumatism, neuralgia, and boils.
Heated flannel bag: Applied externally for toothache and neuralgia.
Sedative effect: Avoid driving or operating machinery after taking this herb.
Avoid in depression: Given its strong nervine/sedative action, Hops should be avoided in depressive states.
Massive doses: Large doses of the aromatic oils can cause fever, sleeplessness, excitability, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, a feeling of heaviness, and loss of appetite — interestingly, most of these symptoms are the opposite of the herb's therapeutic effects at normal dose.
Avoid in lymphatic disorders: Per the source material, Hops should be avoided where lymphatic disease is present.
Skin irritation: Fresh (undried) Hops can be a skin irritant and allergen for some people during harvest and handling.

Cleavers Galium aparine L.
Notice that nearly every historical practitioner quoted below reaches for the fresh herb — bruised in a mortar and expressed for juice, or used as a fresh infusion — rather than the dried form. The source material is explicit: Cleavers should, where possible, be given as a fresh infusion. This is a useful pattern to point out to students, because it isn't true of every herb in our materia medica. When you see multiple independent practitioners converging on "use it fresh," that's a strong signal the volatile or heat-sensitive portion of the plant's action is doing real work.
Primary body systems: Urinary system (kidneys and bladder), skin and lymphatic system, and — more mildly — the digestive system through its aperient (mild laxative) action.
How it works: Cleavers is a soothing, relaxing, diffusive diuretic with a strong influence on the kidneys and bladder. "Diffusive" is the key word — its action spreads and moves rather than forcing, which is part of why it's described as soothing even while it's actively increasing urine flow. This same relaxing, moving quality is what makes it useful beyond the urinary tract: it exercises great control over diseases of the skin, and has a long traditional history with scrofula (swollen lymph glands), indolent tumors, and long-standing ulcers.
Urinary affinity: Excellent in gravel, scalding urine, and irritation at the neck of the bladder. Quite a solvent of stone in the bladder.
Skin/lymphatic affinity: Historically used as a specific in scurvy by the allopathic school in England, and reported by multiple 19th-century practitioners as effective in scrofula, indolent breast tumors, cancer, and long-standing ulcers when the expressed juice is taken internally and the fresh herb applied as a poultice.
Diuretic — Soothing, relaxing, and diffusive; a strong influence on the kidneys and bladder. Excellent in gravel, scalding urine, and irritation at the neck of the bladder.
Anti-Scorbutic — Used as a specific in scurvy by the allopathic school in England.
Tonic — Supports overall constitutional strength alongside its more specific diuretic and anti-scorbutic actions.
Mildly aperient — Per Dr. Coffin, acts mildly upon the bowels in addition to its diuretic action, which is part of why it performs well in edema.
Gravel, scalding urine, and bladder irritation: Excellent for these conditions, and should be given as a fresh infusion where possible.
Acute gonorrhea: Dr. Cook reported strong results bruising the fresh herb thoroughly in a mortar and expressing the juice under strong pressure, describing it as a truly valuable agent for this use.
Indolent breast tumors and sore nipples: Dr. Fox, an English botanic practitioner, described ordering the expressed juice mixed with linseed meal and applied to the breast, combined with a small dose of the juice taken fasting each morning — a plan that, after a short time, removed indolent tumors in the breast. The expressed juice was also applied directly to sore nipples.
Skin diseases generally: Dr. Fox reported giving tablespoon doses of the expressed juice three times a day and never seeing it fail, even in the most desperate cases of skin disease.
Edema (dropsy): Dr. Coffin recommended a tea of Cleavers for edema — valuable both for its diuretic action and its mild aperient (laxative) effect on the bowels.
Scrofula, cancer, and long-standing ulcers: Dr. Coffin also considered Cleavers tea useful in these conditions, and reported improved outcomes in cancer cases combining internal use of the expressed juice with an external poultice of the green herb.
Bladder stone: Quite a solvent of stone in the bladder.
Scurvy: Historically used as a specific for scurvy by the allopathic school in England.
Traditional Formula — Fresh Infusion for Gravel & Scalding Urine
The preferred everyday preparation — should be given fresh where possible.

An annual herb with a straggling habit. The trailing, quadrangular, rough stem can reach 1.2 m (4 feet) and climbs by hooked bristles. Leaves are prickly, cuneate, borne in whorls of 6–9, with coarse hairs on the margins. Flowers are very small, white or greenish-white, borne on inflorescences 2–3 cm (0.75–1.25 inches) long arising from the leaf axils and extending longer than the leaves — blooming in spring and summer. The fruit is bristly, globose, and green to purple.
Distribution: Native to Europe; naturalized elsewhere. Prefers moist, nutrient-rich loamy soils in weedy sites, particularly field and garden edges — a plant students are likely to already recognize from their own yards.
Cultivation: Moist, well-drained neutral to alkaline soil in shade or partial shade. Propagate by seed sown when ripe in summer, or by division in early spring or autumn.
Harvest: Plants are cut when flowering and used fresh, usually pressed for juice or infused in oil. Seeds are picked when ripe.
Iridoid glucosides: Including monotropein, asperuloside, and aucubin.
Phenolic acids: Including o- and p-hydroxybenzoic, p-coumaric, caffeic, and gallic acids.
Flavonoids: About 0.1%, as quercetin glycosides including isorhamnetin, and hesperidin. Luteolin has been isolated from the whole plant.
Coumarins: Umbelliferone and scopoletin have been isolated.
Tannins: 2.5%–4%, of the condensed type.
Other constituents: n-Alkanes, sterols, and fatty acids.
Fresh is preferred: Cleavers should, where possible, be given as a fresh infusion rather than prepared from dried herb.
Fresh infusion: Standard infusion of the fresh whole herb — used everyday for gravel, scalding urine, and bladder irritation.
Expressed juice (general/acute use): Fresh herb bruised thoroughly in a mortar, juice expressed by strong pressure. Dose 15–30 ml (½–1 fl oz) every 4–6 hours.
Expressed juice (tumors, sustained use): 5 ml (1 teaspoonful), taken fasting in the morning.
Expressed juice (skin disease, cancer): 30–59 ml (1–2 fl oz), taken three times daily.
Tea: Standard infusion for edema, scrofula, cancer, and long-standing ulcers.
External poultice: Fresh green herb, applied directly, sometimes combined with linseed meal.
Diabetes: Cleavers is a very powerful diuretic and should not be given where there is a tendency to diabetes. This is the sole contraindication given in the source material, but it is stated plainly and should be treated as a firm caution.

Juniper Juniperus communis L.
The source material gives a specific practitioner caution worth underlining for students: it is not well to use Juniper berries in acute inflamed conditions of the kidneys or bladder unless combined with an agent such as Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum). This is a separate point from the formal contraindications below regarding kidney disease — think of it as a combining rule. Juniper's aromatic, somewhat stimulating diuretic action needs to be balanced by a soothing agent like Gravel Root whenever real inflammation is present, which is exactly why you'll see the two paired in the tincture formula below.
Primary body systems: Urinary system (kidneys and bladder) primarily; secondary application to the musculoskeletal system (rheumatism, sciatica, lumbago) and the female reproductive system (suppressed menses from cold).
How it works: Juniper berries influence primarily the kidneys and bladder, acting as a somewhat prompt and rather pleasant diuretic. This directness — "prompt" — distinguishes it from gentler diuretics; it moves fluid and mucus discharge from the bladder fairly quickly, and has some reputation where uric acid is retained in the system.
Urinary affinity: Indicated in retention of urine, gravel, edema, and mucus discharges from the bladder.
Musculoskeletal affinity: Used in conjunction with other remedies in the treatment of rheumatism, sciatica, and lumbago — not typically as a stand-alone agent for these conditions.
Reproductive affinity: Traditionally useful in suppression of the menstrual flow brought on by cold and exposure.
Diuretic — Prompt and rather pleasant in action; the defining property of Juniper berries, with a strong influence on the kidneys and bladder.
Diaphoretic — Supports the body's sweating response, contributing to its traditional role where cold and exposure are involved.
Aromatic — Carries a strong essential oil content, giving the berries (and especially the infused oil) their characteristic warming, stimulating quality.
Stimulant — The infused Oil of Juniper in particular is noted as more stimulating than the berries themselves.
Carminative — Supports the relief of digestive gas and mild digestive discomfort alongside its primary urinary action.
Retention of urine, gravel, and edema: A somewhat prompt and rather pleasant diuretic, influencing primarily the kidneys and bladder. Also has some reputation where uric acid is retained in the system.
Mucus discharges from the bladder: Traditionally used to help clear these discharges.
Rheumatism, sciatica, and lumbago: Used in conjunction with other remedies for these conditions — Juniper is a supporting agent here rather than the primary one.
Backache and kidney troubles: The infused Oil of Juniper, extracted from both the berries and the wood, has long held a place as a home remedy for these complaints, taken in small drop doses on sugar. The oil is more stimulating than the berries.
Suppressed menstrual flow from cold and exposure: Juniper berries are a useful article here, prepared as a crushed-berry infusion (Formula 1 below).
Combined diuretic work: Juniper is frequently combined with other diuretic and demulcent herbs — Buchu, White Poplar bark, and Marshmallow root — to build a broader, gentler diuretic mixture (Formula 2 below).
Acute inflamed conditions: Not well used alone in acute inflammation of the kidneys or bladder — should be combined with an agent such as Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum) in these cases (see Teaching Point above and Formula 3 below).
Traditional Formula — Suppressed Menses Infusion
For suppression of the menstrual flow from cold and exposure.
- Juniper (Juniperus communis) Berries, crushed — 28 g (1 oz)
- Hot or Boiling Water — 476 ml (1 pint)
Preparation: Crush the berries and infuse in the hot or boiling water. Cover and let stand until cold. Strain.
Dose: 45 ml (3 tablespoons), every three or four hours.
Traditional Formula — Four-Herb Diuretic Mixture
A very fine diuretic mixture combining Juniper's prompt action with gentler, broader-acting urinary herbs. Some herbs in this formula are covered in our advanced course.
- Juniper (Juniperus communis) Berries — 14 g (½ oz)
- Buchu (Agathosma betulina) Leaves — 14 g (½ oz) *Advanced class herb
- White Poplar (Populus alba) Bark — 14 g (½ oz) *Advanced class herb
- Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) Root — 14 g (½ oz) *Advanced class herb
- Water — 952 ml (2 pints)
Preparation: Simmer all four herbs together in the water for fifteen minutes. Strain.
Dose: 45–60 ml (3–4 tablespoons), three or four times daily.
Traditional Formula — Excellent Diuretic Tincture Mixture
For use where the berries are not available, or where inflammation calls for Juniper to be paired with a soothing agent (see Teaching Point above). Some herbs in this formula are covered in our advanced course.
- Tincture of Juniper (Juniperus communis) Berries — 28 ml (1 oz)
- Tincture of Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum) — 28 ml (1 oz) *Advanced class herb
- Syrup of Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Rhizome — 56 ml (2 oz) *Advanced class herb
Preparation: Mix the two tinctures with the ginger syrup.
Dose: 5 ml (1 teaspoon), four times a day.
Traditional Formula — Infused Oil for Backache & Kidney Troubles
A long-standing home remedy. Note the oil is more stimulating than the berries themselves — a smaller, more careful dose is appropriate.
- Infused Oil of Juniper (Juniperus communis), from berries and wood — 4–6 drops
- Sugar — a small amount, to carry the dose
Preparation: The infused oil is extracted from both the berries and the wood of the plant.
Dose: 4 to 6 drops placed on a little sugar.
An evergreen that is quite variable in habit, ranging from a dense procumbent (ground-hugging) shrub to a tree up to 12 m (40 feet) tall. Leaves are needle-like, 5–13 mm (0.25–0.55 inches), borne in whorls of 3, bluish-white on the upper surface. Many plants carry two kinds of foliage at once: scale-like adult leaves and pointed juvenile leaves.
Flowers are insignificant, axillary, and dioecious, greenish-yellow, appearing late spring to early summer. They are followed by fleshy, 3-seeded berries, 7.5–10 mm (0.25–0.5 inches) in diameter, blue-black with a gray bloom when ripe. Bark is red-brown and papery.
Distribution: Native to the Mediterranean region, also found from Arctic Norway to Russia, the north-west Himalayas, and North America. Grows on heaths, moorland, open coniferous forests, and mountain slopes.
Cultivation: Moist soil in sun or partial shade. Tolerates both acid and alkaline conditions, dry and wet soils, and exposed positions — a hardy, adaptable plant. Propagate by seed sown under cover in spring or autumn.
Harvest: Fruits are collected by shaking branches over a ground sheet. Used fresh for oil, or dried for other uses. Worth knowing as a piece of tradition: in southern France, a tar known as "huile de cade" (Juniper Tar) is prepared from the interior reddish wood of the trunk and branches by a distillation process called per descensum.
Essential oil: 0.5%–2.0%, with more than 70 isolated components. Monoterpenes are the main components: 16.5–80% α- and β-pinene, 0.2–50% sabinene, 1–12% limonene, and up to 5% terpene-4-ol, α-terpineol, borneol, geraniol, and related compounds.
Sesquiterpenes: Including cadinenes, often present only in the tree form rather than the shrub form; phenols and esters are also present.
Variable composition: The qualitative and quantitative makeup of the essential oil depends heavily on the plant's origin and on the ripeness of the berries — for example, the 1,4-cineole sometimes mentioned in the literature is often absent depending on source.
Sugars and tannins: Up to about 30% invert sugar (glucose and fructose), 3–5% catechol tannins, plus flavones and leucoanthocyanidins.
Infusion (general use): Juniper berries are best used in the form of an infusion for everyday diuretic use.
Crushed-berry infusion (menses): 28 g (1 oz) crushed berries infused in 476 ml (1 pint) hot or boiling water, covered until cold, then strained. Dose 45 ml (3 tbsp) every 3–4 hours.
Combined decoction (broad diuretic support): Equal parts Juniper, Buchu, White Poplar bark, and Marshmallow root (14 g / ½ oz each), simmered 15 minutes in 952 ml (2 pints) water. Dose 45–60 ml (3–4 tbsp), 3–4 times daily.
Tincture: Used where the fresh or dried berries are not available. Combined with Gravel Root tincture and Ginger syrup for an "excellent diuretic mixture" — dose 5 ml (1 tsp), 4 times daily.
Infused oil: More stimulating than the berries. Dosed at 4–6 drops on a little sugar for backache and kidney troubles.
Pregnancy and kidney inflammation: Contraindicated in pregnancy and in inflammation of the kidneys.
Prolonged use or overdose: Kidney damage may result from prolonged use or from overdose. This is a stimulating, aromatic diuretic and is not intended for indefinite daily use without monitoring.
Kidney disease: To be avoided in glomerulonephritis, nephritis, and tubular necrosis of the kidneys.
Acute inflammation: Not well used alone in acute inflamed conditions of the kidneys or bladder — combine with a soothing agent such as Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum) in these cases (see Teaching Point above).

What you have here are first-level formulas — the starting points, the proven combinations he began with. They are not the finished, refined formulas in our professional capsule product line. Those represent decades of continued development on top of this foundation.
These formulas are yours to use, learn from, and experiment with. They work. But understand what you are holding: a starting point, not an endpoint. The ratio IS the formula. You cannot simply pick up any herbal combination, use any quantities, and expect the same results. Understanding why each herb is present, why the ratios are what they are, and what role each herb is playing — that is the real education. That is what these formula classes are teaching you.
When you eventually hold one of our professional formulas and compare it to these starting points, you will understand — in a way you couldn't before this course — exactly what 40 years of refinement looks like.
Understanding How Formulas Are Built
Formulas nourish body systems — they don't target diseases. The body knows how to heal itself when the right system receives adequate nutrients and support. A well-built formula covers all aspects of a body system so the body can do its own work. This is also why these formulas are more legally appropriate and more broadly useful than disease-specific treatments.
Ratios tell the formula where to go. The herb present in the largest amount generally leads the formula toward the body system it most directly affects. Reverse those ratios and you've changed what the formula is emphasizing. Same herbs, different direction.
Sometimes herbs are equal contributors. Not every formula has a single leader. When several herbs appear in similar amounts all working within the same body system, they are equal partners, each doing slightly different things within that same system to give broader, more complete support.
